Primeira Liga 2025/26: Porto Hold Off Sporting and Benfica
FC Porto claimed the Primeira Liga title with 88 points in one of the closest three-way title races in the competition's history. Sporting CP (82 pts) and Benfica (80 pts) pushed Porto all the way, but the Dragons held their nerve to be crowned champions of Portugal for the second consecutive season.

The Title Race
Porto's defensive solidity — just 18 goals conceded in 34 games — was the foundation of their title win. With a goal difference of +48, they were the hardest team to score against in the league. Sporting CP were arguably the most exciting team in Portugal, scoring 89 goals, but conceded too many to win the title.
The race was decided in the final weeks. Porto and Sporting were separated by just 6 points, with Benfica only 8 behind. Three such evenly matched clubs in a league of this quality made 2025/26 the most compelling Primeira Liga season in years.
European Qualification
Porto (1st), Sporting CP (2nd) and Benfica (3rd) secured Champions League qualification. SC Braga (4th, 59 pts) earned Europa League football. Famalicão (5th, 56 pts) qualified for the Conference League — a remarkable achievement for the club.
Relegation
Tondela (28 pts) and AVS (21 pts) were relegated to the Segunda Liga. AVS were by far the weakest team in the division, conceding 67 goals in 34 games.
The Story: Sporting's 89-Goal Campaign
Sporting CP scored an extraordinary 89 goals this season — more than any other team in the top five European leagues. Despite finishing 2nd, their attacking football under Rúben Amorim captivated Portugal. Viktor Gyökeres was the division's standout player.
It was a season that will be remembered for its quality rather than the outcome. Porto won the title on defensive merit; Sporting lost it in the final few games after dropping points against direct rivals.
Looking Ahead
The three-way rivalry between Porto, Sporting and Benfica shows no sign of easing. Famalicão will look to consolidate their top-5 finish. Tondela and AVS face the Segunda Liga.
